Starwood clinches Hainan deal

Starwood has signed an agreement with Sanya Yingwan Tourism Company to manage the Sheraton Sanya Resort in Yalong Bay at Sanya, Hainan Island, China. Foundation work has already started and the resort is scheduled to open in 2003.

Located on the southernmost tip of China, Hainan Island is the largest Special Economic Zone in China and is fast becoming the country’s premier leisure destination with five million visitors annually. Starwood group president, Miguel Ko said that they were the first upscale international hotel company to manage a 5-star resort in Hainan.

“Hainan Island has seen much investment and growth in its infrastructure, and we are excited at the opportunity to participate in such developments in one of China零 fast-growing zones”, he said.

Facilities include 485 rooms, including 57 suite, six restaurants and meeting and banquet rooms totaling 1,700sqm. The Yalong Bay National Resort District in Sanya also boasts an 18-hole golf course designed by Robert Trent Jones. In China, Starwood currently manages Sheratons in Beijing, Tianjin, Xian, Guilin, Suzhou, Wuxi, Nanjing, Chengdu and Hong Kong.
